Working alone

What's the difference between a Consultant and a Contractor or Freelancer?

This is a very common question and the roles are undoubtedly merging in many respects.

New technology and the Internet means that many of the perceived differences no longer exist.

Even long established permanent employees now have the option to work remotely and can access company databases and networks from their homes.

Many jobs for contractors are advertised side by side with those for permanent or part time staff, so again, the differences are blurring.

Someone who maintains a portfolio of work would probably regard themselves as a freelancer rather than a contractor especially if they receive named credit.

Does it Matter?

The issue of what to call oneself is less important than understanding what is involved when working without the infrastructure and support of a commercial organization.

Help and support is available, but expect to pay for most of it.

Anyone contemplating leaving the cosy employer/employee relationship should consider long and hard what this change will mean to their daily lives and to their families.
