Motivation

It may seem obvious or trite to question our motivation for something as fundamental as looking for a job, yet it will be very difficult to know exactly what we want and more importantly what's best for us, without knowing what the forces driving us are.

When this search for work includes a change of career or switching to self employment, the reasons will be even more important.

You have a choice

Although first time seekers probably have a pretty good idea of why there're entering the job market, the rest of us usually have little more than a vague notion, often no more than a general feeling of needing a change.

But if you're unhappy with your present job, you must ask why?

Is it a lack of responsibility or lack of reward? Is there too much or not enough travel? Is your work too hard or too easy? Is it your boss or your organization that you want to change?

Without knowing what's behind your move, it will be easy to end up with more of the same.

Even someone facing redundancy needs to be clear on what they liked or disliked in their old job to ensure that they do not become a victim of their changed circumstances.

This can be the first step to actively taking control of the situation and claiming ownership of the outcome.

The Benefits

There are many good reasons to be clear on why we are looking for a particular job and some we have already noted but some are less obvious.

Interviewers are prone to asking awkward questions about why you applied for a job and will expect a clear and concise explanation.

They are also likely to enquire why you left your previous employment.

By demonstrating a well reasoned and thorough approach to your own situation you also show how you can perform in a working environment

Future employers want to see a focused and methodical mind and this is your first chance to show what you can do in a real world situation.

Remember also that most of your waking life is spent at work and stress or unease will very quickly spill over to your home life.

Changing Roles

If you are seeking a change in career or to switch from permanent employment to working as a contractor, then understanding why will be paramount.

It is not enough to want a new direction, you must know what's involved and why you think a change is best for you.

Conclusion

Finding a job is one of the major events in most peoples lives.

There are relatively few other opportunities to change your life significantly for the better.

It may be possible to find exactly what we're looking for without trying but this is not the best way.

Employers are acutely aware that the way you approach your job search is a good indicator of how you will approach your work

The effort spent finding the right job is an investment that will pay dividends not just at work, but in your private life too.
