The Project Sponsor

Otherwise known as the Project Owner, Accountable Executive or any other title that indicates the person who is ultimately responsible for the success of your project.

This is becoming an increasingly formal role with no escape clauses, much to the disdain of those executives who had previously chosen to bask in the glory of successful projects, while distancing themselves from those that were less so.

The aim of this increased responsibility is not simply to chasten but to stimulate executive leadership, thus greatly enhancing the project's chances of success.

The Project Sponsor's name is the first to list in your Communication Plan.

A Demanding Role

The project Sponsor is at the top of the information 'food chain' and will demand answers to the most awkward questions.

You are the Sponsor's Representative so expect to be quizzed closely and often.

Vague or evasive answers will not be tolerated and you will do well to double check any 'facts' before presenting them.

Remember that your Sponsor's reputation is on the line so you will be regarded as a point of weakness until you prove otherwise.

Answers please

Senior executives are universally impressed by quantative facts.

  • How much have you spent?
  • How far have you progressed?
  • When will this or that be completed?
  • What more do you need?
  • Are your aims still achievable?

Be prepared for these sorts of questions and expect your answers to be challenged.

Conclusion:

The most senior person responsible for your project is the Project Sponsor.

This person needs to be a champion of change from the outset and not be allowed to adopt a remote stance as part of any exit strategy.

You must ensure that the Sponsor is kept informed and involved; that expectations are achievable and that objectives are shared.

The Project Sponsor is a major constituent of your Communication Plan and their continued commitment needs to be closly monitored.

In meetings with your Sponsor, be aware that what you don't know certainly can hurt you.
